Biomechanics, Gait analysis and MSK, what are they and why do we do it?

Biomechanics is a study of your body and how it moves

We often refer to assessments for this as Biomechanics (or sometimes MSK which is musculoskeletal )

When we observe the lower limb in movement, the foot, knee and hip form a chain and should all work in harmony

When the harmony doesn’t exist, we can get issues in one of the other links in the chain.

During an assessment for Biomechanics, you will be assessed weight bearing, non weight bearing and in gait (usually on a tread mill so we can see the movement from the side)

Each individual has their own unique walking style and this reflects on your general health.

We refer to the walking pattern as Gait. When we look at how you walk we call it gait analysis.

When you arrive for an assessment of this type, you are often asked to bring along a couple of pairs of shoes (not new shoes). You are also usually asked to wear shorts or gym leggings, this helps us see the movement more clearly.

Sometimes the foot requires some extra support and this can be provided in the form of an orthotic or insole. Insoles vary, some are off the shelf. You can also have insoles or orthotics made to measure your foot specifically. You will have a discussion about what is best for you and your foot at the appointment .
